How do I get started?
We always recommend lots of prep work before you begin tracking. Firstly we encourage you to meet with us. This initial discussion and meeting time gives both the musician, as well as us, a chance to talk about objectives, budget, and strategy for reaching your goals. We find that this time is well spent and generally do this as a complimentary service with no obligation to the client. The first question people often ask us is how much is your hourly rate? While this is a significant question it is probably more important to inquire as to the level of experience of the studio, and if they are familiar with your genre of music. Then we recommend that you start with a budget in mind and work backwards from that point. You must also consider the purpose for recording. This will obviously determine the budget somewhat. Once we know the style of music, the purpose and the budget, we can make suggestions such as the number of hours to set aside for tracking, overdubs, editing, mixing and mastering and suggest a plan in order to work within your budget. Recording costs are not just about an hourly rate. A lot depends on how efficiently the time is used, and specifically, how prepared the client is beforehand, ie preproduction. That leads us to the next question. What is Pre-production? or How can I prepare for a recording session? The most cost effective things you can do before going into the studio take some work but pay off in the end result. Rehearse to a click track. Record a rough take during rehearsal or on the live band floor. Play it back and listen to it. Be honest. Did you play without errors, timing issues etc. Discuss what you like and dislike? Consider changing phrasing, experiment with the groove of the song. Practice as much as you possibly can before starting your recording sessions. In other words, prepare to the best of your ability. And remember, no one is perfect and that is why we do editing. |
